  INDUSTRY LANDSCAPE AND EMERGING CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
 India with US $2 trillion economy is poised to become Number One economy in the world by 2050, Surpassing both USA and China. The key economic driver during the past three decades is service industry with 60% of share in India’s GDP. The other key contributors of GDP are manufacturing with 25% share and agriculture with 15% share.
 
 Indian IT/ITES industry with US $150 billion revenue during 2015-16 financial year is the largest employer with 2.2 millions engineers directly and 8 million engineers indirectly.  IT industry is poised to grow to US $250 billion by 2020 creating 8 million new jobs. But the challenge is not employment but it is the employability of our engineers.
 The following emerging areas in IT are the future growth engines and employment creators,

 l Social media
 l  Mobility
 l  Analytics and big data
 l  Cloud computing
 l  Artificial intelligence
 l  Internet of Things
 India, with 1.3 million engineering seats capacity,  only meager 20% of them are employable as per NASSCOM, MCKINSEY report which is a big challenge to all stakeholders i.e., industry, government and education providers. To meet the industry requirements,  companies are exploring new avenues to improve productivity. The recent hiring trend indicates 50% cut in new jobs as 26000 jobs were created for every US $ 1 billion in 2014 and  it is reduced to 13,000 jobs in 2015 for the same revenues.

 It is estimated that by 2020, 50% of India’s population (1.4 billion) will be in the productive age of 25 years, hence it becomes a much bigger challenge to engage this youth productively. To achieve this ambitious target India’s GDP should grow at 7.9% per annum. To accomplish this growth Government of India is proposing the following initiatives.
 
 n New hardware policy - In 2020, global electronic industry to reach US $ 2.4 trillion and India’s share will touch US $ 400 billion. Government of India is encouraging new hardware parks to create US $ 300 billion turnover   creating 20 million jobs. Or else Indian Electronic imports will touch US $ 400 billion by 2020, equal to our oil import bill resulting in deficit budget.

 n Establishing NMIZs (National Manufacturing Investment Zones)
 n Establishing PCPIR (Petrol, Chemical, Petrochemical Investment Region) –At present world chemical industry is US $ 3.4 trillion and India’s share is US $ 108 billion (3% of world chemical business) which is poised to reach US $ 224 billion by  2017 creating 14,000 jobs in chemical engineering field.
 n The government is also keen to give fillip to infrastructure industry with new reforms in terms of land acquisition and environment clearances. It is proposed to invest US $ 500 billion creating 347 million jobs by 2020 as per NSDC  (National Skill Development Corporation). Sun shine areas in the next decade for career opportunities are energy, environment, education, entertainment and entrepreneurship.
